Uncovering May Gibbs
The story of the young May Gibbs, who grew up in Western Australia, spending formative years at Stirling Cottage in Harvey, where her art was first inspired by the bush around her.
With music, anecdotes and images, we learn of her childhood and examine her place on the literary scene of her day, in conversation with her contemporaries, Ellen Turner (Seven Little Australians) and Mary Grant Bruce (The Billabong Series).
May, Ethel and Mary were celebrated authors in the early part of the 20th century, iconic for being the first truly Australian children’s writers, writing for and about Australian children on Australian themes. May’s popularity in particular has, of course, transcended many generations, with her beautiful illustrations and her invention of a fairy tale bush. The three women lived through tumultuous times, saw many changes in attitudes and conventions and were themselves trailblazers for women finding their place between the world wars.
2018 is the centenary of the publication of The Adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie and the 25th anniversary of Agelink Theatre bringing history to life.
Starring well known Perth performers Rebecca Davis, Alex Jones, Clare Moore, Craig Skelton and a supporting cast.
